Tom Brown lives in Grandview with his wife, Sarah, with whom he has two sons. He is recently retired from Kimball International after 17 years with the company. Much of his professional life has been dedicated to the fields of quality control, waste reduction and facilitation between different departments. Brown hopes to put his many years of experience to work in service to his community.
One of his major goals has been to promote economic development in the county. “The county’s role is to make it advantageous for existing businesses and new businesses to expand here,” he said. Commissioner Brown has been a very vocal supporter of the Riverview Energy project at Dale. He serves as board member of both LEDC and the Chamber of Commerce.
While he firmly believes that private-sector investment and innovation is the key to the county’s prosperity, Brown also stressed the importance of county-level public services, such as the maintenance of good roads and effective emergency services.
In an era of tight budgets, he noted that financing these critical public services could be difficult. It is in this challenge that Brown feels his private-sector background could be of great help.
One of the major trends sweeping the manufacturing industry at the moment lies in the realm of eliminating waste, streamlining processes and generally working to do more with less. Many local governments have begun adopting similar principles and training personnel to ferret out inefficiency. As Brown is well versed in these methods from his career in manufacturing, he feels he could be of great help making county government more efficient, transparent and fiscally responsible.
